I have done a bunch of work for JazzRVA the last year or so and it is always so nice to get back to my photography roots....shooting live music. Another bonus is that the music is always great. This event was super exciting because I hadn't gotten to catch a Mingus Awareness Project show in at least 5 years and I knew it was gonna be stuffed full of some of the best musicians around. I was only contracted to stay for the first hour or so but ended up staying and enjoying the entire performance. This year's show was at the Firehouse Theater and I wasn't sure I was gonna be allowed much flexibility while shooting. I ended up being restricted to a seat in the audience with the other media folks and so if the shots look like they were taken from one direction...well, they were! The show was divided into three sets of different bands covering different tunes until they all joined together for the finale. Everyone on stage impressed and entertained while bringing the music of Charles Mingus to the audience.
